About Technische Universität Ilmenau

Collaborations between SigMaSense and TU Ilmenau

For several years, TU Ilmenau collaborates in cooperation with multiple Fraunhofer institutes. Previous researches and the academical network of the TU Ilmenau are of strategic importance for the SigMaSense group: TU Ilmenau as a strong research partner as well as small and medium-sized enterprises with corresponding engagement and support by the Free State of Thuringia offer a significant potential for further mutual collaborations. It enables the application of scientific techniques and the elaboration on theoretical questionings that are raised during the process. Hence, a scientific-based, direct benefit for the economy and thus for the society is generated.

Previous experiences were made in individual cooperation projects with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) at TU Ilmenau. In the course of these, first attempts on the exploitation of compressed sensing approaches in fields such as x-ray tomography and ultrasound tests were conducted. The resources and synergies with the research group Electronic Measurements and Signal Processing (EMS) and new innovative research approaches by multiple science experts provide the basis for a mutual successful cooperation.

The Research Group Electronic Measurements and Signal Processing

The research group of Electronic Measurements and Signal Processing was founded in April 2018 through the fusion of the departments Electronic Measurements and Wireless Distribution Systems / Digital Broadcasts. There is a close collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) which is also located on the campus. The group is devoted to foundational research with the aim to transfer the research results into applied projects.

The group’s competences are measurements, broadcast systems and measuring and characterizing of wave propagation up to 60GHz which is employed in fields such as mobile communications, SatCom, Automotive, location and navigation, radar and in lossless testing (x-ray and ultrasound). Research focusses are Over-the-air research, signal processing and algorithms (in particular compressed sensing and sparsity promoting reconstruction) and channel sounding and channel modelling up to 60GHz UWB and radar.
