In 2012, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Technische Universität Ilmenau, the university received a sapling of Newton's apple tree from the UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL).
Newton's apple tree is associated with one of the most famous anecdotes in the history of science: it is said that a falling apple inspired the mathematician, physicist, and astronomer Isaac Newton to write his monumental law of gravitation. That famous apple tree in the garden of Woolsthorpe Manor was toppled by a storm in 1820, but nothing could trouble the tree so easily and it developed new roots, and it then turned into a new, somewhat oddly shaped apple tree.
